A
commercial truck driver was uninjured Saturday night after his truck and trailer loaded with occupied beehive boxes rolled onto their side along Highway 97 about sixteen miles north of Madras.

According to Trooper Matt Gordon, on March 23, 2013 at approximately 8:35 p.m., a 1999 Freightliner pulling a flatbed trailer loaded with an unknown number of occupied beehive boxes driven by MARTIN R. GARCIA, age 52, from California, was northbound on Highway 97 near milepost 74 at approximately 50 mph when GARCIA said he swerved to miss an animal in the road. The trailer's tires went off the paved portion of the highway and soft shoulder and GARCIA lost control resulting in both truck and trailer rolling onto their side blocking the right northbound lane and shoulder.

GARCIA was not injured. He was cited for Failure to Maintain a Lane of Travel.

Oregon State Police, ODOT and a local tow company responded to the scene. While attempting to upright the truck, a small fire started due to a possible electrical problem and was put out by ODOT personnel.

ODOT and the tow company felt the best course of action was to remove the truck and trailer and leave the beehive load off the side of the highway for later retrieval, expected to be done Sunday. No other information available for this release.
