Under Senate Bill 833, the Oregon Department of Transportation could give short term driver’s licenses or permits to those who cannot show proof of U.S. residency, but meet other requirements.

Those include providing proof of identification and a date of birth through forms such as a valid passport, consular identification document or a social security number. They must also provide evidence marking at least one year of residency in Oregon.

The temporary license would last four years.

The short term license could not be used as identification to obtain a concealed handgun permit or purchase a firearm. It could also not be used to operate a commercial motor vehicle.

The license fee is tentatively set at $74, with a renewal cost of $54.
