Last night, 04/19 at about 1:30 a.m., a deputy with the Marion County Sheriff's Office encountered two vehicles racing at high speeds on Market Street near Clay Street NE. When the deputy attempted to turn around on the vehicles they split directions and began using city streets to hide from responding deputies.

A short time later deputies located a white, BMW 330 that was parked opposing traffic on the side of Swegle Road NE. Deputies believed this was the vehicle they were looking for and when they went to contact the driver the vehicle drove away at a high rate of speed.

Once the deputy got his vehicle turned around he could see the BMW was traveling down 45th Avenue NE toward Center Street NE. However due to the deputy having to turn around the vehicle was lost and deputies again began searching.

It was at this point that 911 operators began receiving reports of a vehicle into a house at 4490 Center Street NE. When deputies arrived they found the BMW had struck a parked vehicle. As a result of the crash the parked vehicle impacted a residence causing significant damage to the house.

The driver of the vehicle Humberto Ramirez, age 20 fled the scene of the crash but was seized after hiding under a house in the 500 block of Citation Way NE, by K9 Yo and his handler, Deputy Wollenschlaeger.

After being treated and released from the hospital for minor injuries associated to the dog seizure, Mr. Ramirez was taken to the Marion County Jail and lodged. Mr. Ramirez is currently being held on 9 counts of reckless endangering, reckless driving, attempting to elude the police and the unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

Mr. Ramirez's 9 counts or reckless endangering stem from his passenger in the vehicle and the 8 occupants of the residence struck by the vehicle he hit. Mr. Ramirez's unlawful use of a motor vehicle charge is a result of him taking his mother's car without her permission.

Deputies want the public to know that this incident took less than three minutes to unfold. Each year deputies respond to calls for service regarding drivers racing and these incidents can often turn tragic or have deadly results. The Sherriff's Office asks that you call 503-588-5032 if you see vehicles racing and report their activity.
