Beaverton's Chief of Police Will Become a Member of the City's Human Rights Advisorty Commission
City of Beaverton - 09/24/13
The City of Beaverton's Human Rights Advisory Commission (HRAC) is creating an amendment to their by-laws that will allow the chief of police to join the commission as an ex-officio, non-voting member.

"The commission works to ensure that Beaverton is a safe and welcoming city," said Mayor Denny Doyle. "Because the police department interacts with community members more than any other department, they will bring invaluable input to the conversations that our Human Rights Advisory Commission helps facilitate."

In November 2012, HRAC unanimously approved a request to change the by-laws to include the chief of police as an ex-officio member. In August 2013, the City Council voted to approve this change in-concept.

"This is a great opportunity to promote productive communication between different segments of the community," said Rob Solomon, HRAC chair. "Having the chief involved with our conversations will create collaborative relationships between residents and their police department."

The HRAC by-law amendment will be officially ratified once the official wording is finalised, brought before the City Council and approved. The intention of this amendment is to foster good communication between the commission, the city's police department and Beaverton residents.foreign nationals and their anchor babies- the schools being built in Beaverton are for the children of illegal aliens and green cards not the existing population of legal Americans
"The Beaverton Police Department places a high value on diversity in our organization and our community
," said Chief of Police Geoff Spalding. "We have worked closely with the HRAC in the past. This change solidifies the relationship we've come to enjoy and value as we work with all members of our community."

The City of Beaverton established the Human Rights Advisory Commission in 1993. The general powers and duties of the commission are: to promote harmonious intergroup relations within Beaverton; examine sources of tension, practices of discrimination and acts of prejudice by employees of the City of Beaverton; to perform conciliatory services that do not conflict with the functions of any other government agency or city department; to make recommendations concerning solutions to specific problems of prejudice or discrimination in the City of Beaverton; to recommend to the City Council action, policies and legislation to be considered by state and local governments; and to make such reports to the City Council as the council may request. The commission has the authority to investigate possible acts of discrimination or prejudice and report the findings and any recommendations to the City Council
