***UPDATE***
The suspect was making fake credit cards and using those credit cards to purchase gift cards. He was not making fake gift cards.

On Sunday, November 16, 2014 at about 11:15am, Beaverton Patrol Officers inquired about a suspicious vehicle with California license plates parked at a local motel. The officers found out that the male associated with the vehicle was using a fake driver's license to rent the room. Beaverton Detectives were called and were able to determine someone stole a California person's personal information back in July of 2014 and was able to obtain a $40,000.00 loan for the vehicle which was a 2007 Mercedes CL 550. The victim was notified of the identity theft and had filed a police report about a week ago.

The investigation led to the arrest of Thomas Geter 40 years old from California and uncovered a sophisticated counterfeit credit card operation being run out of his hotel room. Detectives seized several counterfeit credit cards, credit card making devices, approximately $1,800.00 in cash, over $13,000.00 in new prepaid gift cards, receipts, shredded gift cards, credit cards, and other documents.

Geter appeared to be working alone in Beaverton but could be working with other suspects in California. It appears Geter was targeting Home Depot, Safeway, Albertsons, Walgreens, and Rite Aid stores to purchase the gift cards.

Geter was lodged on aggravated identity theft and Unlawful use of a motor vehicle. Geter's bail has been set at $250,000.00.
