Beaverton Police are attempting to identify the suspect shown in the photos, as well as warn the public of a Craigslist scam involving car sales.
On June 13, Rigoberto Cabrera saw a 2006 Jetta for sale on Craigslist for $5000 and made arrangements to view the car on Apple Way in Beaverton. When viewing the car, Cabrera's daughter took pictures of the seller and the license plate on the car. Cabrera agreed to purchase the car and pick up arrangements were made. In the course of the deal the suspect/seller produced identification out of Washington State (later determined to have been stolen from a gym locker in Vancouver), and a title for the car (later determined to be forged). It was also later determined that the license plate on the vehicle was stolen. After the deal was complete the seller/suspect took the money from the victim and turned over the (fraudulent) signed title with arrangements to get the car from a nearby residence. The suspect never returned with the car. Cabrera lost $3,500 in the scam, which was his life savings, according to his daughter who acts as a translator for her father.
There is an identical incident that occurred near SW 6th Steet in Portland. The victim in that case is Gamaliel Vega. Vega has viewed the photo of the suspect in the Beaverton case and confirmed that the seller in his case is the same person. Vega lost $11,000 in that case.
Both victims describe the suspect as having a thick Russian accent. He is described as over 6' tall with an average build.
Beaverton Detectives are hoping that a tip from the public will reveal the identity of the suspect shown. Anybody with information regarding his identity or location is asked to call Beaverton Detectives at 503.629.0111.
Both victims, Vega and Cabrera, have agreed to speak to the media about their cases. Their contact information is below.
