Injury Traffic Crash - Highway 99E south of Gervais
Oregon State Police - 03/27/13
One person was injured Wednesday morning following a traffic crash during heavy fog conditions along Highway 99E south of Gervais between Waconda Road and Wabash Drive in Marion County. Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation.

On March 27, 2013 at approximately 5:15 a.m., OSP was notified by 9-1-1 of an injury crash on Highway 99E near milepost 38. No troopers were on duty so a trooper was called out from his residence to respond to the scene and arrived at approximately 6:00 a.m.

Preliminary investigation indicates during limited visibility conditions due to heavy fog, two commercial trucks pulling trailers were pulling out from a private driveway located on the west side of Highway 99E to turn northbound. As the first truck was across the southbound lane, a 2003 Hyundai Elantra driven by VIRGINIO PILA INES, age 44, from Gervais, struck the left side rear trailer axle. The Hyundai bounced off the initial impact point and came to rest partially beneath the trailer pulled by the second truck.

VIRGINIO PILA INES was transported by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries to Salem Hospital.

The drivers of the first truck, HENRY VEACH, age 46, and second truck, DEENA HUSTON, age 49, both from Mt. Angel, were not injured. Both were using safety restraints.

OSP troopers from the Salem Area Command office are completing the investigation. Senior Trooper Tim Plummer is the lead investigator. No citations have been issued.

OSP was assisted at the scene by Woodburn Fire Department, local EMS, and ODOT. The highway was closed until 6:45 a.m.

No photographs available for release.
