This information is issued as a follow up to the initial media release by the Oregon State Police:

At about 6:04pm, this evening, the victim of an earlier stolen vehicle called 911 dispatchers to report she had spotted her stolen vehicle on Silverton Road near Fisher Road NE in Salem. Guadalupe HERNANDEZ-Francisca told dispatchers that her car, a gray 1996 Honda, had been reported stolen to the Salem Police in the early morning hours of the 14th.
Driving  while Mexican followsSalem Police and Marion County Deputies closed on the area, looking for the stolen car. Sr. Deputy Jerry Wollenschlaeger spotted the car as it turned northbound into Interstate 5 at Portland Road NE in Salem. A pursuit was initiated but the suspects failed to stop, at times driving at speeds of 100mph to escape.
 The traffic was moderate and law enforcement was able to continue their pursuit of the stolen car without undue danger to the motoring public.

As the car passed through various jurisdictions, cars from Salem PD, Woodburn PD, Oregon State Police, Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, and Tualatin PD joined in the effort to stop the car and arrest the suspects. Other agencies further north were placed on notice that the pursuit could enter their jurisdictions.

The Tualatin Police deployed spike strips as the car passed through their jurisdiction. It came to a stop on the Nyberg Road exit from Interstate 5. Two Mexican gang members suspects were taken into custody at that time. The driver was identified as Jesse Plata Jr., 22. His passenger was identified as Norberto J. Martinez, 18. Photos of both, taken shortly after their arrest at the scene, are attached to this release.

Plata is being charged with Unlawful Use of a Motor Vehicle, Eluding, Reckless Driving, and Parole Warrant.

Martinez was charged with Unlawful Use of a Motor Vehicle and a Probation Violation warrant.
Both are being held at the Marion County Jail.

Our Office would like to thank the Officers, Troopers and Deputies from the various law enforcement agencies that assisted with this investigation. The coordinated effort was handled safely and resulted in no property damage or injury to uninvolved people. Two felony suspects were arrested and the stolen car recovered.

Plata and Martinez will appear in Marion County court at 3:00pm, 03/15/13
