Elected Officials Who...
The sponsors of the proposal, along with the Gang of 8, have tried to characterize this amendment as a "border surge" that includes an increase of 20,000 border patrol agents and requirements for DHS to spend billions of dollars of equipment and build 700 miles of fencing along the southern border. But here's what the amendment really does:
- Maintains the bill's basic framework of providing legal status and work permits to 11 million illegal aliens before any enforcement provisions kick in
- Allows the Department of Homeland Security to ignore the border equipment build-up if it thinks it can secure the border in other ways
- Allows the Department of Homeland Security to ignore the border fencing requirements
- Creates a new permanent, rolling amnesty for future illegal aliens who have legally worked and lived in the United States for at least 10 years
- Increases unemployment and depresses wages, according to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office
- Doubles legal immigration numbers and grants 33 million new green cards in the first decade
