Marion County Cold Case Squad Presumed Illegal Mexican Gustavo Villanueva Gutierrez Arrested Murder of Illegal Maribel Gutierrez-Salinas

Bones identified and suspect arrested Marion Co. District Attorney's Office - 08/27/13 On 9/1/2012 at approximately 9:34 AM a hunter from Mill City Oregon contacted the Marion County Sheriff's Office and reported that he had found what he believed to be parts of a human skeleton while hunting adjacent to Niagara Heights Road approximately seven tenths of a mile north of Highway 22 and east of Gates, Oregon. This area is a forested area of the Santiam Canyon vicinity in east Marion County Oregon. Following the discovery, a Forensic Anthropologist at the State Medical Examiner's Office, analyzed the remains and determined they were human. The Marion County Sheriff's Office Cold Case Squad took over investigation of the case. Based on their investigation, Cold Case Detectives discovered and confirmed the skeletol remains were those of Maribel Gutierrez-Salinas, DOB 2/8/74. The detectives also developed Gustavo Villanueva Gutierrez DOB 10/12/70,as the suspect in the case. Gustavo Villanueva Gutierrez and Maribel Gutierrez-Salinas were married. Through the course of this investigation the case was presented to a Marion County Grand Jury. On 8/20/13 the Grand Jury voted a true bill on a Secret Indictment for the charges of Murder and Abuse of a Corpse. Yesterday, the Marion County Sheriff's office Cold Case Squad arrested Gustavo Villanueva Gutierrez in Laredo Texas for the murder of Maribel Gutierrez-Salinas. To avoid compromising the investigation and prosecution, and for the safety of some, the news of the identity of the remains and Gustavo Villanueva Gutierrez being suspect in this matter has not been made public until today. The Marion County Cold Case Squad was formed in September of 2004 and consists of four volunteers who have a Special Deputy Commission and work under the supervision of a full time detective. Members of the Cold Case Squad include: Don McMullen, retired FBI; Richard McDonald, previously with the Oregon State Police and retired from Federal Fish and Wildlife; Don Crabtree, retired FBI; Jack Janssen, retired Salem Police Department; and Detective Mike Myers of the Marion County Sheriff's office.
